Robbie Savage says Karim Benzema should join Manchester United ahead of Arsenal

Karim Benzema France

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright voiced his disagreement.

Robbie Savage has told BBC Radio 5 Live that Karim Benzema should join Manchester United ahead of Arsenal.

Benzema is the subject of heavy speculation linking him with an exit from Real Madrid, with The Guardian claiming the Gunners are planning a late bid.

Savage believes Manchester United should be a more attractive option to the French international, even though there is no suggestion at present they are in for his services.

He said: "If they (Benzema or Lewandowski) had the choice, United with their signings, that's the club to be at. Whoever buys a centre-forward are favourites (for the league)."

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright voiced his disagreement, insisting the Gunners would be a better option for Benzema.

He said: "Right now I'd pick arsenal. They are on that upwards curve for me right now."

Do United need Benzema more?

It is fair to suggest Manchester United have a more pressing need for Karim Benzema, with uncertain back-up options for Wayne Rooney up front.

It is uncertain how much Louis van Gaal believes in Javier Hernandez, and James Wilson is unproven at the top level.

Arsenal last season showed they could cope without Olivier Giroud for a long stretch, and even flourished at times withut Alexis Sanchez, their 5-0 league win over Aston Villa one such instance.

The lack of competition at United may be preferable for him, but it would ultimately come down to which club makes the best pitch to try and sign him; and with the Red Devils not seeming to show an interest it appears to be a one-horse race.
