Clyne joined the Reds this summer and could well become England's first-choice right-back for years to come. Tottenham's Townsend, meanwhile, has been in poor form at club level over the past few months but seems to perform better on international duty.
And, during a Soccer AM Q + A, the final question concerned who England's most intelligent player was and Clyne hesitated, before muttering the words "er... Andros Townsend."
He then burst out laughing!
Two months ago, Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck was asked who the national team's least intelligent player was and he replied 'definitely' Townsend.
This appears to be a reference to that episode, with Liverpool full-back Clyne at least being a little less blunt about the Tottenham winger.
Whatever club he joins, though, it seems he'll always have a bit of reputation while on England duty!
