The former Arsenal defender believes the Belgian could be a big hit for Liverpool this term.
Liverpool have been one of the biggest movers in the transfer market this summer.
The Reds knew that improvements were needed after a disappointing campaign in 2014-15, which ended with a dismal 6-1 defeat at the hands of Stoke City.
The club have done good business to bring in the likes of Joe Gomez, James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Roberto Firmino, Nathaniel Clyne and, perhaps most importantly, Christian Benteke.
Liverpool failed to score enough goals last season.
They did not replace Luis Suarez last term. Daniel Sturridge was injured for most of the campaign, Mario Balotelli struggled to find form and Rickie Lambert looked out of his depth at Anfield.
So Benteke is massively important to the upcoming season.
One man who thinks he will have an impact is former Arsenal defender Martin Keown. Writing in his Daily Mail column today, he suggested that Benteke might in fact finish the campaign as the league’s top scorer.
"Right now I’ve got no idea. If Christian Benteke takes off at Liverpool and carries on where he left off last season he could be in with a shout.
"He’s got to start the season flying at Liverpool and he almost needs to be the league’s top scorer if Liverpool are to have a good season and Brendan Rodgers is to hang onto his job.
"Aside from him it will probably be one of the usual suspects. Sergio Aguero is probably a safer bet to be top scorer, especially if he stays fit. Diego Costa won’t play enough to do it and Harry Kane has a lot to prove in his second season."
Benteke has already caught the eye in a Liverpool shirt, scoring a fantastic volley against Swindon Town in a recent pre-season friendly.
If he can continue his form from last season, in which he scored 13 goals in his last 16 games, than Liverpool and Keown are undoubtedly on to a winner with this gamble.
