The German midfielder has stated that if the Merseysiders get off to a good start there is a chance to fight for top spot.
The Reds have had a major upheaval of their playing squad this summer, with Brendan Rodgers moving quick to replace the outgoing Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard.
A host of new players have moved to Anfield, giving the Kop renewed hope that the Merseyside club will be fighting for a place in the top four next season.
However, Can has set his sights slightly higher and is eager for Liverpool to be in the title race from the early days of the campaign.
"We've a very very strong team, with a lot of good-quality players, who work together well as a team," he told the club’s official website.
"I think if we can start well and get a few good results under our belt, we can then keep our focus on each match as it comes, and hopefully compete for the title.
"We'll wait and see just how far we can get in terms of a title race.”
Can was an impressive new addition to the Reds’ squad last summer and has showed the ability and versatility to play both as a central defender and in the heart of midfield.
With Gerrard leaving his boyhood club over the summer there is potential for the former Bayern Munich youth product to play in his preferred position, but it remains to be seen just where Rodgers will deploy the Germany under-21 star.
