Liverpool media round-up: Sturridge provides further update, build-up to opening game

Daniel Sturridge

A selection of the latest stories in the media involving Liverpool Football Club this Thursday morning.

After reports emerged that Daniel Sturridge could return to first team action a month earlier than expected, the Liverpool Echo has picked up on a video the forward has posted as he continues his recovery from a hip operation undergone towards the end of last season.

The video shows Sturridge doing some work with the ball including volleying and heading the ball, and the video was titled 'closer'.

The start of the season is fast approaching with the Reds returning to the scene of their 6-1 final day demolition when they travel to the Britannia Stadium to take on Stoke City on Sunday, and former defender Jamie Carragher has said the side must not lose to the Potters.

In his column for the Sky Sports website, Carragher said: "I think it is important for Liverpool to look at this game as a great chance to put to bed what happened at the end of last season.

"We know that Liverpool did not have a great season last season and all eyes will be on Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool, so it is vital that they get off to a good start because the fixtures they have got are very difficult."

Midfielder Emre Can is hoping the Reds hit the ground running, and he has told the official Liverpool website that the side owes the fans a good, positive start to the new season.

He said: "I hope I can get the goal tally started quickly. We didn't end the last season particularly well, and I think we owe it to the fans to make amends.

"This is why the first few matches are especially important. I think we can start to put [the Stoke result] right with a few good results."

Finally, the Liverpool Echo is reporting that winger Jordon Ibe is becoming the centre of an international tug of war, with both England and Nigeria vying for his services at international level.

Nigeria officials visited Melwood about Ibe potentially playing for them, as he qualifies through his father, and would be eligible to switch allegiances having not yet made an appearance for the senior side.
