Emre Can explains his aim for good form at Liverpool this season

Can played in defence for much of last season, but he is expected to play a lot more in midfield in the year ahead.

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can is hoping to add more goals to his game this season as he embarks on his second campaign with the Reds.

The young German scored just the once last season in a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League while playing in central midfield, but for most of his appearances he formed part of the defensive unit.

Can has told the official Liverpool website: "I want to stay fit healthy and in form - that's always the most important goal to set oneself.

"I want to play as often as possible, and to have a good consistent season-long run of games.

"I'm certainly planning to score a few good goals!"

The central midfield area of the side looks very competitive ahead of the new season with Jordan Henderson and James Milner a duo that seem almost guaranteed starters for the Premier League games.

As it currently stands there could be room for another player in the middle of the park depending on where Brendan Rodgers wishes to use Philippe Coutinho in certain games. He could use him a deeper role or in more supporting role to the front men.

Then there is the kind of set-up that Rodgers will want to use as he has adopted both a 4-4-2 diamond and a 4-3-3 formation during the pre-season games.

It isn't just Can that needs to get in the goals more this season, it's the entire side - but watching the German this season is likely to be fascinating as he is still developing and has shown himself to be a dynamic player.

But since he arrived back from pre-season late because of international duty, Liverpool fans might have to wait a little while yet to see him getting a regular start in central midfield.
