The Villa squad numbers might just give a hint of the plans to sign Emmanuel Adebayor this summer.
Today has seen Aston Villa confirm their squad numbers for the upcoming campaign, with plenty of new faces being assigned their numbers for a debut season at Villa Park.
Micah Richards, who has also been confirmed as the club’s new captain, has been given the number 4 shirt – signifying his first-team presence at the club this campaign. That number has been worn by the likes of Ron Vlaar and Olof Mellberg in the past.
Fellow newbie Idrissa Gueye has been given the number 8 previously worn by Tom Cleverley whilst Jordan Veretout has been handed the number 17 shirt.
Jordan Ayew will wear 19, Jordan Amavi 23 whilst other newbies Mark Bunn, Jose Angel Crespo and Rudy Gestede will wear 31, 33 and 39.
Returning loanee Joe Bennett has taken his number 3 shirt back and Gary Gardner has been handed the 22.
But perhaps most interesting is not the numbers that have been given out, but the one glaring vacancy – number 10.
They could have given the shirt number to new signings Ayew or Gestede, or perhaps even promoted Jack Grealish from 40. Instead it remains open, perhaps for one more signing from Tim Sherwood.
The club have been heavily linked with Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor recently, although The Daily Mail are currently reporting that the deal is on the ropes.
Sherwood got the best out of Adebayor at Tottenham and the Togo striker’s preferred squad number is, number 10.
Time will tell if Adebayor wears the number at Villa Park next season.
