Gray suggested that the high number of signings that the club has made in the transfer window so far, makes it difficult to judge how they will all fit into the system at Anfield as the club looks to significantly improve on their finish from last season.
“I just don’t know with Liverpool. I look at their squad and I see a lot of good names and a lot of talent, but I saw a lot of that last year and look how it ended up for them so I have no idea. The start for them is so important, over the first eight weeks that’s so vital,” he told talkSPORT.
Key issues addressed
Manager Brendan Rodgers deserves some credit because there is evidence that he has addressed key issues with regards to the squad.
Nathaniel Clyne is an extremely talented player at right-back, James Milner can play multiple roles in midfield, with Roberto Firmino, Danny Ings and Christian Benteke all providing extra cover in attack.
What’s important for the manager is that he finds a system quickly, which gets the best out of all of them and allows the Reds to grit their way through a very difficult opening part of the season.
The club’s difficult early away fixtures have been well publicised but they represent an opportunity and Liverpool could take advantage and take a good early position in the Premier League, while opposition sides are trying to find an effective way to deal with the multiple threats they now have.
