Trevor Sinclair reacts on Twitter to Micah Richards being named Villa captain

Micah Richards

The BBC pundit sent the Aston Villa defender a warm message on social media.

Trevor Sinclair was delighted to hear news that defender Micah Richards has been named Aston Villa's new captain by boss Tim Sherwood.

Indeed, the 27-year-old has had the ultimate honour bestowed upon him by the Aston Villa manager following his arrival at Villa Park this summer.

Richards has a wealth of experience but lost his way somewhat at Manchester City, falling out of the first-team picture at the Etihad Stadium.

Sherwood is clearly confident the defender can offer plenty to the Aston Villa first team, however, subsequently naming him club skipper despite his recent arrival in the Midlands.

And BBC pundit Sinclair, who used to turn out for a number Premier League sides, has congratulated Richards and wished him all the best ahead of the new top-flight season.

Will Richards succeed as Villa captain?

His new role at the club is a vital one, as the side's defensive struggles over the years have been notable. Sherwood needs a strong defender, in particular, as his gung-ho approach will often leave the Aston Villa back line exposed.

Richards will need to be able to stand up and be counted back there, leading by example.
