Tottenham Hotspur legend Teddy Sheringham told 888sport that his first priority if he was in charge of the club, would be to create a real leader at the back of the team.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has done well to improve his defensive options ahead of the new season, which has been a problematic area of the team over the last couple of years.
However, Sheringham has suggested that the hard work isn’t over in terms of the back four, calling for a leader to step forward and guide the side through a very important season as the club tries to get into the top four.
“A real good leader at the back would be my first priority. Someone of Ledley King’s ilk would be lovely,” he told 888sport.
There are already a couple of good leadership candidates in the Tottenham defence.
Jan Vertonghen already has experience of the role and Hugo Lloris is also someone who is more than capable of leading the side.
Vertonghen is arguably the better option because he plays in the heart of the defence and it’s easier for him to communicate and get messages across to key players in key areas during big games.
Vertonghen has stated his Champions League ambition clearly in the past and he’s someone who can play a big role in giving the team the best possible chance of achieving that goal this year.
Other areas which must be addressed
There are other areas, which need to be addressed heading into the new season.
The club still need to try and get an extra striker into the side, because of the pressure which currently surrounds Harry Kane.
There are questions around Tottenham at the moment but if they are answered quickly and effectively, there’s no reason why the club can’t move forward.
