Report: Everton and West Ham eye Genoa's Sebastian De Maio

The Premier League duo are looking into making a move for the defender, according to reports in Italy.

Premier League duo Everton and West Ham United are eyeing a move for Genoa defender Sebastian De Maio, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Roberto Martinez’s side are in desperate need of defensive additions this summer after both Sylvain Distin and Antonlin Alcaraz left the club at the end of last season.

That has left them with just Phil Jagielka and John Stones as their senior centre-halves in the squad, leading to a number of defenders being linked with a potential move to Goodison Park.

De Maio is the latest of those, although it seems the Blues will face competition from West Ham United for the 28-year-old, according to the report from Gazzetta.

Slaven Bilic’s side are strongly interested in adding the player to their squad, and have done good work in Italy already this summer, having concluded deals for Angelo Ogbonna and Pedro Obiang.

Everton in more desperate need

Of the two clubs, it is the Toffees who are in more desperate need of a defender given their current shortage of numbers in that area.

An injury to either Jagielka or Stones would leave them seriously short, with just several youngsters as back up to replace them. In contrast, West Ham now have a number of defensive options, although Bilic may not be happy with what he has at his disposal.

Where the player would choose to go is a difficult question to answer, although it is fair to say that he has a better chance of securing regular first-team football with Everton than he does at Upton Park.
