Jack Wilshere faces an anxious wait to find out if he needs surgery on his latest ankle injury, report The Mail.
Wilshere was injured in training ahead of the Community Shield, the 10th time he has suffered an ankle problem, which have to date severely hampered the progression of his career.
The Arsenal midfielder will reportedly find out his fate before the weekend, with a best case scenario putting him out for 6-8 weeks, a return in late September.
If he needs surgery then he could be out for three months.
The news is devastating for Wilshere either way, who had bounced back from a serious ankle injury last season suffered against Manchester United.
By the end of the season he had hit form, displayed with an impressive brace for England against Slovenia, and a stunning goal on the last day of the season which fans voted as Match of the Day's Goal of the Season.
Competition for places in Arsenal's midfield is intense, and Wilshere needed to hit the ground running this season.
Now he must show his patience once again, and place his faith in the good hands of Arsenal's medical staff.
