Even when paying a compliment, Michael Owen seemingly goes out of his way to deliver a negative for Arsenal.
Talking up Alexis Sanchez's abilities for his Colossus Bets column, he followed it up by claiming he was an inferior player to Eden Hazard and would not get into the Chelsea team.
Owen has tipped the Blues to retain the title, and Arsenal to finish third behind Manchester United.
He said: "Hazard underlines what I said about Chelsea holding many of the aces in this league.
"I am big fan of Alexis Sanchez – in fact, I think he is one of the league’s top players – but he plays on the left and he wouldn’t be ousting Hazard out of the Chelsea side any time soon."
Owen ignores Sanchez's versatility, and ability to play across the forward line, on the left, right, up front, or behind the striker.
According to WhoScored data, Sanchez made 18 of his starts on the left last season. He also made 13 centrally, and nine on the right, meaning that he played on the left in under 50 per cent of his starts.
Comparing the two is like splitting hairs, and surely if Sanchez was at Chelsea, a way would be found to get both players into the same XI. Even so, Sanchez could credibly mount his own case for selection.
