Liverpool's Nathaniel Clyne suggests planned improvements to his game; states club's season ambition

New Liverpool right-back Nathaniel Clyne has highlighted his personal areas for improvement ahead of the upcoming season.

Nathaniel Clyne is eyeing a Premier League title challenge with Liverpool this season, while he has also highlighted improvements he wishes to make to his personal game in an interview with the Liverpool Echo.

The £12 million summer signing from Southampton has impressed throughout pre-season with his new club and the England international is optimistic about what he and the Reds can achieve ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.

The 24-year-old experienced a stand out season with Southampton last term, as the club finished the campaign with the division's second-best defensive record, having conceded just 33 goals.

However, it is the attacking side to his game which he wishes to develop following his arrival at Anfield.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, he said: “I’m confident in my ability and the player I am that I can make the next step up. I wouldn’t have moved if I didn’t think I was ready.

“I’m fairly confident defending and one vs ones, and I still think there is more in me for getting forward. If I can add to my game going forward that would be great.”

Last term the Englishman finished significantly behind the Premier League's most creative defender, Leighton Baines.

The experienced Everton defender created 61 chances for the Toffees throughout the previous campaign, while ex-Saints man Clyne recorded just 22 key passes.

In fact, as the table below shows, the Liverpool man didn't even feature within the top ten most innovative top flight defenders.

  #TeamKey Passes
Leighton Baines 1 Everton 70
Kieran Trippier 2 Burnley 64
Branislav Ivanovic 3 Chelsea 37
Aaron Cresswell 4 West Ham 35
Patrick van Aanholt 5 Sunderland 35
Seamus Coleman 6 Everton 34
Alberto Moreno 7 Liverpool 34
Daryl Janmaat 8 Newcastle 31
Mauricio Isla 9 QPR 30
Ryan Bertrand 10 Southampton 27
Nathaniel Clyne 17 Southampton 22

Having revealed his personal ambitions for the upcoming season, Clyne also stated the club's target - to challenge for the Premier League title.

“Two seasons ago, Liverpool were pushing and nearly won the league, so we’re not too far away and with the additions to the team this year, we are looking to push on again,” he said.

“Hopefully we can push for the title this season.

“You can see with the team and the quality that we have got that we can have a special season.”
