Jeff Stelling considers Tottenham striker Harry Kane to be 'the real deal'

Stelling tells HITC Sport that Kane is capable of repeating his 2014/15 heroics for Tottenham Hotspur as long as he has the right support.

It is remarkable to think that Harry Kane – the darling of White Hart Lane – had to wait until 2nd November before opening his Premier League goal account in 2014/15.

Admittedly his tally for the season already stood at eight by the time Tottenham Hotspur travelled to Aston Villa that day – including a Europa League hat-trick against Asteras Tripolis – but Kane was still a relative unknown in terms of what he was capable of producing on a top-flight stage.

Nine months later and the 22-year-old is a household name, leader of his club and a senior England international with a debut goal inside 80 seconds to look back on.

The question now, of course, is can he repeat those heroics in 2015/16?

His efforts last season quickly brought him to the attention of rival defenders, although many could do little to halt his charge – with capital foes Chelsea and Arsenal among those to feel the full force of his talent.

He is by no means the first forward to enjoy a breakout campaign, though, and Kane must prove that he is no flash in the pan and that consistency and goal threat can be maintained over a prolonged period of time.

Sporting figures from around the world have been queuing up to have their say on the Spurs academy graduate, and the general consensus appears to be that he is capable of kicking on from this point.

Jeff Stelling is among those to buy into that way of thinking, with the Soccer Saturday host - speaking at the filming of the new TV advert from Carlsberg that transforms a simple five-a-side kickabout into probably the best kickabout in the world - telling HITC Sport during a phone interview that Kane is already ‘the real deal’ and just needs greater support from a new addition to help him carry the burden of expectation in north London towards a bright future.

He said: “Can he do it again in a second season? It will be hard to match what he did last season, that’s for sure – he was brilliant. You look at Tottenham and without (Hugo) Lloris, (Christian) Eriksen and Kane, where would they have been last year? Well, probably around the Newcastles of this world.

“Kane’s goals – he scores all sorts, his enthusiasm is incredible, his attitude is brilliant. He tailed off towards the end of the season, but that is to be expected after having such a phenomenal campaign. What he needs is some support at Tottenham. He can’t be expected to do it all on his own, which he was at times last season. Will he kick on? I think he will. I think he’s the real deal and I think he’ll have another good season.”

Spurs supporters will be hoping to see Stelling proved correct in his assessment, with the lack of striking reinforcements this summer offering cause for concern to many.

They do, however, have in Kane a man who has shown that he is capable of carrying the fight all by himself, so until the fresh faces arrive, the club will feel that they remain in safe hands.

As the Official Beer of the Premier League, Carlsberg unveiled its latest “If Carlsberg Did…” TV advert during the traditional season curtain raiser between FA Cup winners Arsenal FC and Premier League champions Chelsea FC. Starring Jeff Stelling and Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel, the new TV advert from the brand transforms a simple five-a-side kickabout into probably the best kickabout in the world.
