The Tottenham Hotspur legend has laid things out in simple terms for the Argentine.
Indeed, the Tottenham icon feels the likes of Christian Eriksen need to have an even bigger season than last term to offer Harry Kane support up front.
But he has delivered a damning verdict on Lamela's future, suggesting the Argentine could even be offloaded by Spurs should he underwhelm.
The 23-year-old produced bright sparks at the end of last season but it is generally accepted that he has nowhere near lived up to his big-money price tag since moving to north London.
Hoddle told Kicca: "It concerns me about them up front. Harry Kane staying is great but he needs to play up front with people.
"Eriksen needs a big season, even bigger than last year, and people like Lamela have got to turn up this year, if not you’ll see him sold in the window."
Is Hoddle's verdict fair?
Considering the potential Lamela is still thought to have left in his locker, Hoddle's verdict might be seen as a little harsh. But another season where the winger will have 'almost' delivered for Tottenham, simply seen as a prelude to more next campaign, will surely not be enough.
In that sense, Hoddle is being as fair as he can. The 23-year-old has perhaps rightly been given a chance to prove himself until now. But this must be his season. If not, Spurs can't be blamed for getting rid.
