The former Celtic boss hinted to The Bolton News that the young forward is in contention to start the match against the Rams this weekend after playing 105 minutes of football in pre-season for the first time since March.
Lennon told The Bolton News: “He’s only played half a dozen games when you really look at it – he exploded on to the scene and created that bit of excitement – so we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do.
“He’d got 45 minutes in Austria and then 70 minutes against Charlton, but that was his first football since March. We know there is far more going to come from him, so we’ll keep it all in a bit of perspective.
“He looked good and he actually improved as the game went on, so that bodes well for us going forward.”
Can Clough be the difference against Derby this weekend?
If the youngster is to start the game this weekend, it could possibly be the toughest test of his young career so far.
Although Lennon has hinted that he could well be in the team for Saturday, he also touched on the fact he may not be 100% going into the game against a potential defensive duo out of the likes of Richard Keogh, Jason Shackell, Alex Pearce and Ryan Shotton.
It could be a hard ask for the starlet to be the difference in the match against the Rams, especially if he isn’t fully fit, so it could be worth Lennon looking at the bigger picture and resting him for a more suitable date.
Gary Madine has been in great form this pre-season and will be itching to prove himself in the Championship after a couple of years out of the limelight.
