Aston Villa squad more balanced now, says Tim Sherwood

The manager has also provided an injury update, with three stars missing for the Premier League opening weekend.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has provided an injury update ahead of the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

The Villans face a trip to newly-promoted Bournemouth on Saturday, in what is likely to be a difficult tie as Eddie Howe’s side look to make their mark in their first ever Premier League fixture.

Sherwood has revealed that Carles Gil, Jack Grealish and Jores Okore will all miss, although Carlos Sanchez and Brad Guzan will be available for selection.

"I don't like to give too many updates as it can always come back and hit you in the face!” he told

“Carles [Gil] and Jack [Grealish] are still out injured. Okore is still injured with his knee which he had operated on at the end of last season. Carlos doesn't need a rest as I gave him a month off [and] Brad's is a different situation [as] he hasn’t lost too much fitness.”

Squad has a better balance this season

The former Spurs boss has taken charge of his first pre-season at a club this summer, while it is also his first full transfer window as a manager, meaning the scrutiny is intense.

He has had to deal with the departures of star players thus far, with Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph moving to Liverpool and Manchester City respectively, while Ron Vlaar left on a free.

He has, though, spent heavily, with nine new faces having arrived at Villa Park so far and several others expected. He insists, however, that his squad has a better balance to it than last season - when the club struggled for long periods prior to his appointment as Paul Lambert's successor.

"We have a squad with a better balance than we had last season," he added.
