The defender has been named Aston Villa captain for the new season.
The former Manchester City man, who signed for the club this summer on a free transfer, has had the armband for a number of pre-season fixtures, but it was confirmed today that he will be Tim Sherwood’s captain in his first full season of management at Villa Park.
Speaking after the news, Sherwood said: “He gives us a fresh start, that's for sure. He's someone that's come in and we think Micah is the correct choice to lead the team. He's vocal and leads by example.”
This ‘fresh start’ that Sherwood speaks about is why Richards has been handed the armband, as it signals a new era at the club.
They need to start progressing and moving forward this term, and bringing a new captain into the fold ensures that the club have no lingering memories of last season.
Gabriel Agbonlahor remains club captain, but Richards will always wear the armband on the field of play, and Villa fans took to Twitter to express their delight at the appointment.

Micah Richards a good choice as captain. Experienced and I like captains to be in defence - better view of the field in front of them #avfc— Matt Turvey (@mturvey_star) August 5, 2015

I think having Richards as captain is a great choice, he's vocal and has experience. Also in favour of having a captain in defence #avfc— jonjon (@jonby2) August 5, 2015
