Newcastle are hoping Aleksandar Mitrovic becomes their new Alan Shearer.
Speaking to the Mirror, recent Newcastle signing Aleksandar Mitrovic has explained what fans should expect of him when taking to the field of play.
He said: “I am a typical No 9, who is always in the box. I am strong, good in the air and I like getting stuck in. I play a physical game.”
These are words that should certainly excite Magpies fans, who have lacked a real top class centre-forward since Alan Shearer’s retirement.
Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba both enjoyed productive spells in front of goal, but since Shearer’s departure, there has never been a classic style number nine to lead the attacking charge.
Until now, that is.
Mitrovic has admitted that he is a physical striker, who is always looking to get in the box and lead the line from the front.
He will disrupt defences, and has no desire to back down in the face of adversity. Of all Premier League strikers currently playing, he is most similar to the likes of Diego Costa, who go about their role regardless of what is in front of them.
Of course, doubts will remain about Mitrovic until he starts to truly impose himself in the Premier League, as his goalscoring in Belgium was in a league of far lower quality. But 43 goals in 89 games should not be overlooked due to the quality of the league - especially as Mitrovic is still only 20.
Mitrovic looks to have all the talent to establish himself at St James’ Park, and if he can enjoy a positive season with the Magpies, the Tyneside club can start dreaming of the world class striker they have been missing for a number of years.
