Former Arsenal player Adrian Clarke told talkSPORT why he feels Jack Wilshere has had so many ankle injuries so far in his career.
The Guardian has reported that the midfielder is set to miss the start of the campaign with a fresh ankle issue, which creates a familiar issue relating to the England international.
It’s a shame considering the impressive way he played for England following the end of last season and is an area Clarke feels he needs to work on.
“I think he’s just got to keep those ankles nice and strong this year – The problem is that he’s one of those players who seems to draw a tackle. He’s so clever he can draw a tackle, nicking it past a defender and that’s why he gets knocked on the ankles,” he told talkSPORT.
Difficult challenge for Wilshere
The main issue for Wilshere is the fact that he’s in and out of the first team at Arsenal, which makes it very difficult for him to build some momentum.
As soon as he started to get some form behind him, he’s picked up another problem and finds himself out of contention in terms of starting the season.
That creates an immense mental strain over the player, who will likely be very frustrated over not being able to show his best form over an extended period of time.
In terms of how he can make his ankles stronger, it’s an area where he needs to work closely with the club.
The medics at Arsenal have a big responsibility to ensure that Wilshere is giving himself a better chance of avoiding injury issues, which if they persist, will become a permanent mark against his name for all the time he’s at the club.
