Newcastle United will take on Southampton in their opening game of the 2015-16 Premier League campaign.

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren has told The Daily Mail that he is undecided about starting Aleksandar Mitrovic against Southampton.

The Serbia international striker played in the Magpies’ final two pre-season friendly games against York City and Borussia Monchengladbach.

The 20-year-old has not exactly made a great start to life at Newcastle, as he is still getting to know the club and his teammates, having joined the Premier League outfit from Belgian giants Anderlecht just around two weeks ago.

McClaren has now suggested that he is not fully sure if Mitrovic will start in Newcastle’s opening game of the 2015-16 Premier League campaign against Southampton at St. James’ Park on Sunday.

“I think there is a chance the fans could really like him up here,” the Englishman told The Daily Mail. “I think you saw that when he came on (against Monchengladbach).

“He's one of them old type of centre-forwards. He's only 20 years old as well so he's still got a lot of potential to come. I'll see how he trains this week before deciding if he starts (against Southampton).”

Aleksandar Mitrovic should start against Southampton

While it is understandable why McClaren does not want to throw in Mitrovic under-prepared against Southampton, it is imperative that the youngster starts against the Saints.

The Serbian has played in big Champions League games before, which means that he will not be intimated at the prospect of playing in front of around 50,000 spectators in the world’s most popular domestic league.

The Newcastle fans have already taken to Mitrovic, whose confidence is certainly going to increase with every cheer he gets.

The Magpies need to make a positive start to the season and have to pick up as many points from their home matches as possible.

Winning against Southampton even at St. James’ Park will not be easy, and the presence of Mitrovic in the starting line-up is going to enhance their chances of doing just that.
