Newcastle defender Coloccini has been linked with a transfer to Crystal Palace.
Lee said: “If Coloccini does pledge his future to Newcastle that will certainly be good news for the short term future of the club. He’s the club skipper and a leader on the pitch, which is something every club needs. But most importantly he’s the best centre back Newcastle have got at the moment.
“If there was a better player in his position then it would not be the end of the world if he left, but right now there isn’t.”
Considering the defensive positions are arguably the weakest in the Newcastle squad, Coloccini could still have a role to play this season.
This is despite being out of form for much of campaign, and looking to be far from the play he was at his peak.
The 33-year-old could still quite easily get into the Newcastle back-line, which is a worrying thought for fans of the club. Chancel Mbemba has been signed, and although Steven Taylor is a solid partner, his injury issues mean Coloccini is likely to play a role.
Lee believes this is best for the Magpies, considering the fact that Newcastle have yet to sign another centre-back to take the Argentine’s place.
Coloccini’s future at St James’ Park is still in doubt, after a turbulent pre-season and reports in the Mail claiming Crystal Palace want to sign him.
Yet Lee believes Newcastle would be wise to keep ahold of the club captain, as he is still the leader on the pitch, and can fill a playing role in the centre of defence when needed due to a lack of cover in the back-line positions.
