Steve McClaren’s side will kick off their 2014-15 Premier League campaign with a home match against the Saints on Sunday.
The 20-year-old Serbia international, who joined Newcastle from Belgian giants Anderlecht last month, has said that he will find the target against Ronald Koeman’s side at St. James’ Park.
Speaking to Newcastle’s official website after making his debut against York City away from home last week, Mitrovic said: “I wanted to score and was doing everything to score but I was a little unlucky.
“Maybe it will happen on Saturday, or if not then against Southampton - that is the most important game and I am sure I will score in that one.”
Mitrovic is a highly-rated young striker who has scored big goals in the Champions League, and one should not be surprised if he does find the target against Southampton.
The youngster is likely to start the encounter, and he will be determined to make a positive start to life in the Premier League.
Playing at home in front of a cheering crowd will also be helpful to Mitrovic’s aim of scoring against visiting Southampton.
