Could Newcastle United make the Manchester United winger their fourth signing of the summer?
The 22-year-old is a talented player but he has only featured once for United’s first-team to date, spending the majority of the last few seasons on loan at the likes of Derby County, Birmingham City and Brighton & Hove Albion.
He impressed at all three clubs, as he has for United’s under-21s for whom he has scored 16 goals and provided 20 assists to date. So what chance Newcastle getting the player?
Well a report in the Sun this week claimed Bristol City were hoping to complete a £2.5million deal for Lingard after United manager Louis van Gaal cleared the way for the player to move on.
And yet now ESPN claims sources have told them Newcastle manager Steve McClaren remains keen on Lingard and is ready to make a move of his own.
If Lingard did arrive at St James’ Park he would be Newcastle’s fourth signing of the summer, following Chancel Mbemba, Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic to the club.
The latest report claims that if Newcastle get any indication that the Old Trafford outfit are willing to sell they are ready to make a bid.
So it could all come down to just how true Bristol City’s alleged interest in the player is, because there is no doubt Lingard would be a canny addition to the Magpies’ blossoming squad if they get the chance to bid.
