German press: Southampton scouts watch Leon Goretzka, Saints willing to pay £11.2m

Southampton are reportedly targeting Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka.

According to Bild, Southampton are ready to lodge a bid of €16m (£11.2m) for Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka this month.

The Saints have, once again, lost some of star players this summer, with the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Toby Alderweireld and Morgan Schneiderlin all moving on to Premier League rivals.

Yet, just like a year ago, manager Ronald Koeman has moved to replace his former stars, bringing in the likes of Cedric Soares, Steven Caulker and Jordy Clasie, as well as Maarten Stekelenburg, Cuco Martina and Juanmi in what has been a busy window for the Saints.

Now though, German newspaper Bild report that Southampton scouts have watched Schalke midfielder Goretzka - and manager Koeman is willing to bid up to £11.2m to land Goretzka this summer.

The 21-year-old, who joined Schalke from Vfl Bochum two years ago, is primarily a central midfielder who can also play out wide, and possess the ability to get from box to box, and at 6ft 2in he's also athletically gifted.

Tipped as a future German international, Goretzka could find that Southampton are the perfect home for him to continue his development, given their history of work with young players.

With Victor Wanyama marshalling the back four and the aforementioned Clasie dictating play from deep, Goretzka could offer Koeman a natural box-to-box option in midfield, creating an impressive balance in the middle of the park - and three players who all have potential to become even better.
