Celtic fans laugh off Southampton’s reported bid for Virgil van Dijk

Premier League outfit Southampton are reportedly interested in signing Virgil van Dijk from Scottish Premiership giants Celtic this summer.

Celtic fans have dismissed speculation that Virgil van Dijk will leave the club and join Southampton this summer.

According to a report in The Scottish Sun at the weekend, Premier League outfit Southampton have made a bid of £8 million for the defender.

It was reported by the British tabloid that the Saints believe that it is a fair price given that the defender is cup-tied this season, having featured in the Champions League qualifiers for the Bhoys.

However, Scottish Premiership champions Celtic want more than £8m as they have no need to sell the 24-year-old centre-back this summer, according to the report.

Southampton are an ambitious club and could feature in the group stage of the Europa League this season.

However, Celtic could do one better and play in the group stage of the Champions League if they can safely negotiate the qualifying rounds.

It is every player’s dream to play in the Champions League, and staying at Celtic could give Van Dijk that opportunity.

Following the report, Celtic fans posted comments on HITC Sport dismissing any suggestion that the club will sell one of their best players.

Ross: “We don't have to sell him at all, if he can get us into the group stages of the Champions League then sell him next year, we'll make a lot more money than selling him now.

“We can still get at least £6m for him next year, he will only be sold this year if we don't get to the group stages of the Champions League.”

adee1888: “Been saying for weeks he's worth about 50 mill if stones worth 28 mill virgil miles better than stones and virgil worth about 15 mill he's a class act and anyone buying this guy is getting in time the best cb in the world.”
