West Ham United have been linked with another centre-back but they have only just signed one.
According to a report from Italian website Tuttomercatoweb, West Ham United have joined the race to sign Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly; but if the Hammers’ interest is real what could it mean for the centre-backs already on their books?
After all, West Ham have only just signed Angelo Ogbonna from Juventus, while the club also have the likes of Winston Reid, James Tomkins and James Collins, while youngster Reece Burke will be hoping for more chances in the upcoming campaign and beyond.
Assuming West Ham continue playing two centre-backs, Koulibaly’s arrival – which is purely speculative at this point – could leave plenty of players disappointed, and when you consider Ogbonna’s shaky start to life at Upton Park he may be the one to suffer, at least in the short-term.
While fellow summer signing Dimitri Payet has shone, Ogbonna has looked rusty and his own-goal against AC Astra continued his hit-and-miss start to life at the club.
There is no doubt the 27-year-old is talented, but if Koulibaly did arrive – and it is a big if for now – Ogbonna would most likely be dropped in favour of the 24-year-old Frenchman.
Strength in depth is vital for big clubs challenging for big honours and the way West Ham have carried out their transfer business they could be set for a wonderful new area under Bilic, so perhaps it is simply a case of recruiting sufficiently in order to have the players to compete in four competitions – and for a prolonged period of time as the club is currently experiencing.
But if West Ham’s interest in Koulibaly is real, it could make for an interesting twist in Ogbonna’s brief but eventful career at the club so far.
