Aston Villa have been linked with moving for former Tottenham and Manchester United forward Berbatov.
The Villa legend said: “There were talks but I can’t reveal you anything at the moment. It’s a nervy period for Berbatov, his agent and Villa and they’ll be the first to announce if there’s something.”
The Mirror reported last week that Berbatov could be on his way to Villa Park, following the expected transfer of Emmanuel Adebayor from Spurs to Villa.
Tim Sherwood has already brought in two strikers to replace the departed Christian Benteke - with Jordan Ayew and Rudy Gestede being signed - but Adebayor and Berbatov would provide something different.
The Bulgarian especially is a striker who will not fit in with the energetic, attacking play Sherwood is known for, but his classy finishing ability is still evident despite his increasing age.
The 34-year-old is a proven quality in the Premier League - with 122 goals in England spread across spells with Spurs, Manchester United and Fulham - and he could prove a good mentor for the younger players in the team.
Petrov has confirmed that talks have been held between Berbatov and Villa, although he has not confirmed the progression of a deal as of yet.
Being out of contract, it is likely that he would accept a return to the Premier League, and if talks progressed well, it will surely not be too long before a deal can be reached to bring the classy Bulgarian back to England.
