The Netherlands international has stated that even had Louis van Gaal come knocking, he would have ended up at St Mary’s.
The gifted former Feyenoord player has move to the south coast as a natural replacement for Morgan Schneiderlin, who has swapped St Mary’s for Old Trafford.
United have been mentioned as possible suitors of Clasie in the past, with Louis van Gaal also having been involved with the diminutive battler for the Netherlands national side.
However, despite the link between countrymen, Clasie has stated that he would have opted to sign for Southampton over United even if the Dutch maestro had come calling.
“If the United interest had become concrete I think I still would have preferred Southampton," Clasie told The Sun.
"It’s better to start lower and finish higher than the other way round.”
Southampton fans will know that they have a lost an excellent player in the form of Schneiderlin but will place high hopes that Clasie can be an able deputy.
The Saints have become used to losing star players in recent summers, but have always replaced them with players of a similar pedigree.
Ronald Koeman was a driving force in moulding Clasie into the star he is today during their mutual time at Feyenoord and will have faith that the midfielder can be a revelation in England.
