Despite a summer of rebuilding at Newcastle United, not everybody is convinced this season will yield an improvement for the club.
Outspoken pundit Robbie Savage told Breathe Sport last night that he feels the Toon are not just going to be in another survival scrap, but believes they will be one of the three teams to be relegated to the Championship.
He said: "They have made three signings and spent £50 million, but I fear for Newcastle.
"Steve McClaren is a good coach, but Derby should be in the Premier League. They were in control, and finish in eighth.
"Newcastle had a poor season last year, they are a big club, with big expectations, and could struggle."
Savage is a former Derby player and therefore has particular grievance over the Rams' late collapse in their promotion bid last season, but amid that was the distraction of McClaren being courted by Newcastle.
As a result of that failure to win promotion, he will be even more determined to prove his detractors wrong, and Savage has provided further ammunition for his motivation.
Newcastle have bought well with Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba, and it is possible they are not done there yet.
Nothing can surely be as bad as their woeful run under John Carver last year which saw them retain their status as a Premier League side only on the season's final day. Predicting a bottom half finish may be reasonable, but Savage's call for relegation could be stretching it.
