Middlesbrough have attempted to break the impasse with Blackburn Rovers over Jordan Rhodes, by offering them players in the deal, HITC Sport understands.
Boro have been pursuing Rhodes all summer, and their most recent offer worth up to £12million was rejected last week.
Teessiders’ chairman Steve Gibson has become actively involved in the talks with Rovers’ hierarchy. Boro had only previously offered cash and add-ons, but now they have decided to try and entice Rovers with players.
HITC Sport understands that amongst those players put to Rovers have been Lee Tomlin – who has interested Premier League new boys Norwich and Bournemouth in recent weeks, Muzzy Carayol and Yanic Wildschut.
And it is understood Rovers’ interest has been peaked, and their boss Gary Bowyer is believed to be keen on more than one player in Boro’s squad.
Rovers have just lost Rudy Gestede to Aston Villa and a deal for Adam Le Fondre fell through as he joined Wolves instead, so they also need reinforcements.
Boro are hoping that they can strike a deal for Rhodes ahead of this weekend’s opener at Preston and they are clearly not giving up on the Scottish striker, who has already declared his desire to speak with the North East club.
