The Radamel Falcao restoration project is not going to be an instant success.
The Colombian was a half-time substitute for Chelsea against Arsenal in the Community Shield, but could not help his side equalise Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's first half strike.
Falcao was on loan at Manchester United last season, making a shock deadline day switch from Monaco.
It proved too much too soon after a serious knee injury, and by the new year he had lost the faith of manager Louis van Gaal.
Signing him permanently proved too expensive for United, but Chelsea stepped into sign him on a season long loan for 2015/16, to compete with Loic Remy as a back-up for Diego Costa.
Costa was originally Falcao's replacement at Atletico Madrid when the Colombian signed for Monaco. Before Falcao's injury he was regarded as one of the most clinical and direct strikers in world football.
His signing could yet prove a masterstroke by Jose Mourinho, and he will surely do better than he did at United last season, but at Wembley there were no early signs of redemption.
Watching Manchester United fans appeared glad to have moved the South American on, and also positive that the decision was not coming back to haunt them.
Here is a look at how supporters reacted to his display...
