Former Arsenal and West Ham forward John Hartson told talkSPORT why he feels Brendan Rodgers is under pressure at Liverpool to guide the club to a fourth place finish in the Premier League.
Hartson feels the calibre and size of the club’s spending in the transfer market this summer means that the Anfield club need to try and break the top as a result.
“I think he needs to finish in the top four having spent a lot of money again this summer – I think top four is a possibility but it will be difficult because Chelsea, City, United and Arsenal will be in and around it but I think they’ve bought reasonably well,” he told talkSPORT.
The importance of a good start
It’s important that Liverpool get off to a good start for two main reasons.
Firstly, it can help to take some of the pressure away from Rodgers as he looks to ease Liverpool into the season.
Some early wins will reaffirm the belief that Rodgers is the right man to be taking Liverpool forwards domestically and in terms of Europe.
Secondly, it’s also important considering the difficulty Liverpool face in terms of their early fixtures.
They play the majority of their main rivals and if they can get off to a good start, it sends out a message to those rivals as well as allowing the club to get into a good position near the top of the table.
Is Rodgers in danger of losing his job?
It’s difficult to say but considering the way he’s been backed in the transfer market, it’s difficult to see how he can avoid serious questions over his position by the winter.
