Werder Bremen came from a goal down to secure a 2-1 win over West Ham United in a pre-season friendly at Upton Park on Saturday afternoon.
Hammers newboy Dimitri Payet was at the heart of the action from the go. He has been a revelation for the club since joining from Marseille this summer and he excelled again, despite defeat.
The Frenchman ran the game, going close twice in the opening exchanges, first with a free kick that deflected wide off the top of the wall and then with a well-saved shot.
He then played an integral role as the hosts grabbed the lead on 19 minutes, picking up ball on the right side before delivering a low cross, from which teammate Diafra Sakho hooked in a volley.
However, it took the German outfit less than minute to level the scores as Anthony Ujah caught out Adrian with a driven effort from the edge of the box, with the ball going between the keeper's legs on its path to the back of the net.
Payet continued to pose a threat as the Hammers looked to regain the advantage, but he was unable to craft a killer opportunity.
Instead, it was Bremen who took the lead just after the half-hour mark, with Ujah slipping by James Tomkins, before drilling the ball into the far corner from the edge of the box to secure a victory for the visitors.
Payet was then removed at the mid-way point, prior to a half of very few chances from either side.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the Frenchman's cameo.

Losing 2-1 to Werder Bremen a disappointment, but encouraging signs from many, including Payet. Will miss this place. pic.twitter.com/dC6mXjXfuc— Dan Wright (@Dan_WrightKM) August 2, 2015

Plus points today - Sakho & Payet continue to look dangerous, Oxford gets better every game & Lanzini could be a real asset from the bench— Tommy (@TommyIOD72) August 2, 2015
Sakho is such a lad! Payet behind him is world class, but sakho can't do it all himself. A striker is needed next to him and we will be fine— Nicky Stewart (@NickyStewart10) August 2, 2015
@B1gLeeP89 Dimitri Payet bright again. Just fear there won't be enough people there to finish off the chances he creates.— Daniel Prescott (@DanielDPrescott) August 2, 2015

Quite a boring game here in pre-season against Werder Bremen, the result is irrelevant but except from Payet we're lacking any creativity— Jack Lebeau (@JackLebeau66) August 2, 2015
