The dust has settled on the former Blackburn man’s move to Villa Park, as Villa boss Tim Sherwood further increases his squad options ahead of the new Premier League season.
It was always going to be difficult for Sherwood to replace someone as talented as Christian Benteke, but the encouraging factor is that he’s been proactive and has made sure that he’s got extra bodies into the building before the first game.
“Strikers in the past have been successful here at Villa and I hope to follow the same path. I know that No.9-style player has been very popular with fans of this club. Hopefully I will follow that lead and have a similar impact,” he told avfc.co.uk.
Patience will be important
Gestede is going to need patience from the manager and the club’s fans because he’s stepping up from the Championship into a much more difficult Premier League.
There will be a level of expectation surrounding his position in the side because of how successful Benteke was in terms of leading the attack.
However, he’s a different player and will play in a slightly different way.
A good start needed
If Gestede can get off to a good start with his Villa career and hit the back of the net over the first couple of weeks, then his popularity and belief will improve.
It will give him some confidence and put a spring into his step, which will make him a very difficult forward to play against for any team.
