The former Chelsea legend's debut against his old club was just one of an interesting number of side stories at Wembley on Sunday.
Arsenal beat Chelsea 1-0 in Sunday's Community Shield, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scoring the game's only goal.
Although the match is usually merely the introduction to the Premier League season, with few teams worrying about the result too much, there were plenty of underlying stories in the this weekend's fixture between the two London sides.
Not least was the fact that both clubs have a deep dislike for each other that seems to exist between the two managers as well as the fanbases, and this was underlined once more as Arsene Wenger seemingly dodged Jose Mourinho's impending handshake at the end of the match, perhaps anticipating that he himself would have been snubbed.
That the Frenchman beat Mourinho for the first time in his career was also a major talking point, especially with the Gunners having been in outstanding form in 2015. Arsenal may well take added confidence that they are capable of beating any opponent, and are genuine Premier League contenders.
A large part of the improvement from last season comes as a result of Petr Cech's headline-grabbing move to the Emirates having proven himself a legend at Chelsea. He was celebrating with his new teammates, and commiserating his old ones at the final whistle.
