Aston Villa media round-up: Rolan still a target, Gary Gardner allowed to leave

A selection of stories in the media involving Aston Villa over the last 48 hours.

Aston Villa remain in the hunt for Bordeaux striker Diego Rolan, according to France Football.

Newcastle are also reportedly interested in the 22-year old, who bagged 15 goals in Ligue 1 last season, and the Villans will need to act quickly if a deal is to be struck.

Gary Gardner will be allowed to return to Nottingham Forest this summer, according to a report in the Nottingham Post.

The Villa midfielder moved to the City Ground in January on loan, for the second half of the season, and isn’t believed to be part of Tim Sherwood’s long-term plans.

Meanwhile, Villa are set to fight off interest from West Brom and tie down central defender Ciaran Clark, to a new long-term deal, as reported by the Birmingham Mail.

The 25-year old has just 11 months to run on his current deal and had been the subject of an approach from the Baggies last week but a stay at Villa Park now appears to be on the cards.

Villa look set to miss out on one of their reported summer targets, with Spanish outlet Diario Sur reporting that Malaga midfielder Sergi Darder is closing in on a Lyon switch.

The Spanish Under-21 international was heavily linked with a Villa move last month but the arrivals of Idrissa Gueye and Jordan Veretout has seen the club cool their interest.

Finally, Tim Sherwood has issued a rallying cry to Nathan Baker after the defender signed a new four-year deal last week, stating:

“I spoke to Nathan and told him I think he’s got all the attributes to be a top player. He needs to find some durability in his game because I think the maximum he’s ever started in a season is 18 games, which isn’t enough and he knows that," on the club's official site.
