Southampton have made a bid of £8 million for Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk, according to The Scottish Sun.
It has been reported by the British tabloid that the Saints believe that it is a fair price given that the defender is cup-tied this season, having featured in the Champions League qualifiers for the Bhoys.
However, Scottish Premiership champions Celtic want more than £8m as they have no need to sell the 24-year-old centre-back this summer, according to the report.
Should Virgil van Dijk leave Celtic?
Southampton are an ambitious club and could feature in the group stage of the Europa League this season.
However, Celtic could do one better and play in the group stage of the Champions League if they can safely negotiate the qualifying rounds.
It is every player’s dream to play in the Champions League, and staying at Celtic could give Van Dijk that opportunity.
While moving to Southampton could open doors to bigger clubs in the Premier League and perhaps even mainland Europe, if Celtic are able to qualify for the group stage of Europe’s premier club competition, then Van Dijk should remain at Celtic Park for the 2015-16 campaign.
