Report: Southampton closing in on a deal for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly

Southampton have been linked with a move for Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.

According to a report in the Mirror, Southampton are close to securing a deal for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly as Ronald Koeman seeks to bolster his side’s backline.

After missing out on Toby Alderweireld to Tottenham Hotspur, Saints were dealt another defensive blow during pre-season as Florin Gardos was ruled out of action for up to seven months with injury.

As such, the Saints have been seeking defensive additions this summer and were said to be among those interested in James Chester, according to the Mirror, before he joined West Bromwich Albion.

However, it appears Ronald Koeman’s side’s luck has finally turned with Steven Caulker previously joining on loan from QPR and now fresh reports in the Mirror claiming that a deal for Koulibaly is close.

Who is Kalidou Koulibaly?

The Napoli centre-back is a former French U20 international who started his career at Metz, later joined Belgian outfit Genk before making his big switch to Italy only last summer.

The 24-year-old started 27 Serie A matches for the club last season, boasting an average of 2.3 interceptions, three tackles and 4.6 effective clearances per encounter.

He can be described as a powerful individual, standing at 6ft 5 inches and strong in the tackle. Moreover, he fits in with the Saints’ style of play well due to his surprisingly good distribution from the back.

Ronald Koeman’s men boasted the best defensive records in the Premier League last season, and brining in Koulibaly may help them achieve repeat that feat in the upcoming campaign.
