Joey Barton jokes about needing a club and Leeds United fans respond

Some Leeds United fans clearly still want to see Joey Barton turn up at Elland Road.

Former Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has taken to Twitter to joke about his need to find a new club before the Premier League and Championship campaigns kick off next weekend...and fans of Leeds United among others have responded.

A report from the Sun back in June claimed Leeds owner Massimo Cellino was prepared to offer Barton a £1million-a-year contract to sign up at Elland Road, but instead the Whites moved for Tom Adeyemi on loan before focusing on strengthening out wide.

With Tommaso Bianchi requiring surgery and thus being ruled out for the start of the season, Leeds manager Uwe Rosler is a little short in central midfield, but a late move for Barton would be a surprise at this stage of the summer.

Whatever the future holds for Barton he was in jovial mood when he wrote the following message on social media this weekend: “Community shield signals the start of the season; better get myself a club then…”

He may have been a free agent for a few months now but the former QPR skipper still has plenty to offer and he is unlikely to be short of options when the time does come to decide.

Leeds are unlikely to be one of them, and only time will tell if opting for youth over experience pays dividends for Rosler’s talented squad, but below you can read some of the messages Whites' fans sent to Barton in response to his comment:
