Popular Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal’s Community Shield triumph over Chelsea will be a huge psychological boost heading in to the new campaign.
The Gunners headed into Sunday’s clash having emerged victorious in both the Asia Cup and the Emirates Trophy this summer, prompting plenty of talk over their title aspirations.
Facing Chelsea, while only seen as another competitive friendly, was evidently a real test of their mettle and they came through in impressive fashion, downing Jose Mourinho’s men 1-0.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the only goal of the game, a wonderful curling finish midway through the first-half, yet it was Arsene Wenger’s side’s defensive display which was most impressive.
The Gunners have long been thought of as a brittle, blessed with attacking quality but fragile at the back. On Sunday, they were anything but as Petr Cech, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker stood firm.
Writing on Twitter after the final whistle, Carragher believes the result will have little impact on Chelsea in the long run but will provide a massive boost for Arsene Wenger’s side.
No big deal for Chelsea but psychologically for Arsenal to beat Chelsea can only help them going into the new season.— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) August 2, 2015
Arsenal’s best chance in years:
Aside from Arsenal boasting arguably their best squad of players over the past decade, they’ve now developed into a team capable of beating their Premier League rivals on any given day.
Over the past eight months, they have defeated both Manchester City and Manchester United away from home while Sunday’s win over the Blues was Wenger’s first in 14 attempts against Mourinho.
They have the attacking talent, the determination at the back, the balance in midfield, the squad depth and now the ability to overcome their direct rivals – What more proof is needed to show that this team is ready?
