A youthful and experimental Everton side lost to Championship outfit Leeds United yesterday 2-0. With one eye on the Duncan Ferguson testimonial Everton decided to play a slightly stringy outfit – especially the back line.
A lot of talk this summer has been of how Everton need to buy another defender this summer. The club lost Antolin Alcaraz and Sylvain Distin this summer – leaving them short in defence for the 2015-16 campaign.
However, Everton do have these young talents to call upon – with Brendan Galloway also an option for the club.
The club have a good history for blooding young talent and perhaps that is the theory in the defensive department this campaign.
Pennington can play at both centre-back and right-back. Jones is a right-back who can also operate in midfield, and was handed a new deal by the club earlier in the week. Browning is also versatile and has impressed whenever he has featured for the first team. Robinson won the under-18s Players’ Player of the Season award last term. The quartet will be hoping to become regular first-team footballers at Everton this season.
Here is some of the best Twitter reaction to their performances yesterday…

Hard not to be impressed by way likes of Browning, Pennington & 17-year-old Robinson are competing against very physical Leeds side. #efc— Patrick Boyland (@Paddy_Boyland) August 1, 2015
Pennington, Dowell, Browning, McAleny have all looked real good today! They can provide the depth in squad. #EFC— Indian Blues' Views! (@IndianToffees) July 28, 2015
Main thing I took away from that game was that Everton are taking the piss in the promising young left-back stakes. Robinson the pick.— Chris Smith (@cdsmith789) August 1, 2015
