Everton fans react on Twitter to young defence's performance v Leeds United

Tyias Browning in particular was in top form for Everton at Elland Road.

A youthful and experimental Everton side lost to Championship outfit Leeds United yesterday 2-0. With one eye on the Duncan Ferguson testimonial Everton decided to play a slightly stringy outfit – especially the back line.

Everton lined up with Matthew Pennington, Antonee Robinson, Gethin Jones and Tyias Browning at the back and the young quartet all impressed in the game, despite the end result.

A lot of talk this summer has been of how Everton need to buy another defender this summer. The club lost Antolin Alcaraz and Sylvain Distin this summer – leaving them short in defence for the 2015-16 campaign.

However, Everton do have these young talents to call upon – with Brendan Galloway also an option for the club.

The club have a good history for blooding young talent and perhaps that is the theory in the defensive department this campaign.

Pennington can play at both centre-back and right-back. Jones is a right-back who can also operate in midfield, and was handed a new deal by the club earlier in the week. Browning is also versatile and has impressed whenever he has featured for the first team. Robinson won the under-18s Players’ Player of the Season award last term. The quartet will be hoping to become regular first-team footballers at Everton this season.

Here is some of the best Twitter reaction to their performances yesterday…
