The Gunners boss wants more goals from his star man next season.
The German is expected to play a big part in the Gunners' season after returning from injury last year to inspire them in the fine run that culminated in their second successive FA Cup win.
While an important player in the side, he has often failed to find the back of the net, registering just four goals throughout the whole of last season, and Wenger says he is looking for more from his attacking midfielder next season.
“I also want more goals from him because he plays in a position [high up the pitch] and he’s a good finisher,” he told arsenal.com.
“He doesn’t take enough chances when he’s in a position where he can finish. He’s conscious of it and he wants to do it now. His main aspect will always be the intelligence of his passing and his creativity, but he gets into positions where he can finish better and we want 10 goals per season from him.”
A star in the Premier League next season
The boss is also adamant that his man can be one of the star players in the Premier League next season.
While the German has impressed since his big money move from Real Madrid in 2013, he is arguably yet to hit the heights he enjoyed at the Bernabeu, where he registered 47 assists in 105 La Liga games.
Those assists have been less forthcoming at the Emirates, but Wenger insists he is now showing more authority in his game than ever before, and anticipates a big campaign in 2015/16.
“He shows more authority to dictate the game than before,” added Wenger.
“In the second part of last season we saw the intelligence of his passing, the fact that he added some steel to his game, which was needed, and I’m confident that he can be one of the great players of 2015/16.”
