The Irish striker will be hoping for success in League One football.

Former Leeds United and Ipswich Town striker Noel Hunt has found himself a new team, as he has agreed to join Southend United for the upcoming season - as announced on the club's official website.

The Shrimpers are managed by Phil Brown, who used to coach Noel’s brother Stephen at Hull City, and the move sees him sign a one-year deal with an option to extend it should the first season be a success.

Southend were promoted from League Two last season via a play-off win against Wycombe Wanderers.

The Republic of Ireland international left Leeds in January, having his contract terminated by mutual consent. He joined Ipswich Town, where he spent a successful period on loan, but injured his knee and that caused doubt in the club’s mind over extending his stay in Suffolk. He was released this summer.

The Irishman joined up with Leeds from Reading in 2013, following his former boss in Berkshire Brian McDermott.

Hunt played 22 times for the club but never scored and his spell is generally considered the thing of flops.

He will now be hoping for better things at Southend, as they look to thrive in League One.
