Paul Merson comments on the prospect of Arsenal signing of Barcelona's Sergio Busquets

Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets has been linked with a move to Arsenal.

Popular football pundit Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that Barcelona defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets would be a 'massive' signing for Arsenal in their bid to win the Premier League title.

According to a report in the Spanish publication Diario Sport, Arsene Wenger has pinpointed the World Cup winner as the ideal man to partner Santi Cazorla in the middle of the park.

That post currently belongs to Francis Coquelin, a player who was relatively unknown to most Premier League observers before bursting onto the scene in quite dramatic fashion last season.

Nonetheless, the general consensus is that there is scope for a big-money midfield addition and that Busquets has been singled out, a player Merson believes would make a huge difference to the Gunners' ranks.

“I still think that they need a holding midfielder – they are talking about them putting in a bid for Busquets and if they can get him that would be a massive signing as he is a big player,” Merson said.

“Arsenal had Francis Coquelin in that role last season, but will you win the Premier League with just him as your holding midfielder though? I don’t think so.”

Chances of signing Sergio Busquets?

Arsenal are undoubtedly a heavyweight in Europe, but they have little to no chance of being able to prise Busquets away from one of the greatest club sides of this generation.

The treble winners are looking to add another three titles in 2015 alone and with their unbelievable strike force, it will take something to stop them from winning another glut of trophies in 2016 too.

Can Arsenal win the Premier League with Francis Coquelin?

It has been widely discussed that the Gunners need a new defensive midfielder to win the Premier League title. However, if Coquelin can stay injury free, then they have every chance come next May.

The French midfielder helps maintain an incredible balance alongside deep-lying playmaker Cazorla and considering the club’s attacking options, Arsene Wenger’s side can prevail if form and fortune favours them.
