Aston Villa have been one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market this summer, their total number of transactions passing the 20 deal mark.
Key players such as Fabian Delph and Christian Benteke have departed, yet that hasn’t stopped boss Tim Sherwood from resting on his laurels and ruing the Villa Park favourites’ decisions to move on.
The former Tottenham Hotspur boss has been as active as anyone this summer, bringing in as many as nine new players, with six of those costing at least a seven-figure sum.
The latest to join is Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers, a 6ft 4inch powerhouse who shares a number of similar traits with last season’s club top scorer Benteke.
As per the graphic above, he is a natural replacement for the Belgian international and could be partnered alongside fellow striker signing Jordan Ayew in a new-look front line.
Sherwood now has plenty of options in midfield, with Ashley Westwood and Idrissa Gueye providing defensive protection while Jack Grealish and Scott Sinclair supply creativity from wide areas.
The back five also includes two new signings, former Manchester City star Micah Richards in the centre and exciting left-back Jordan Amavi, who could provide width down the left flank.
While a 4-2-3-1 formation does perhaps lack presence in the middle, changes are available to Sherwood with Charles N’Zogbia and Jordan Veretout capable of creating a spark off the bench.
Villa have an interesting start to the season, and Sherwood’s primary task now will be working out his best formation and how he can integrate his new signings into a favoured starting XI.
