Fabricio Coloccini's Newcastle future reportedly in doubt; club would almost certainly accept cash offer

Could the Newcastle United centre-back be on his way after missing out on their final pre-season match of the summer?

According to a report from Chronicle Live, Fabricio Coloccini’s Newcastle United future is in doubt after the defender was left out of the Magpies’ squad for their pre-season match against Borussia Monchengladbach.

The 33-year-old is in the final year of his Newcastle contract but he has not featured at all for Steve McClaren’s side during pre-season and with no chance to assess him during a match it remains to be seen if the new manager will play him when the competitive action kicks off next weekend.

The Chronicle report cites an Achilles injury as the reason for the player’s absence this summer, but with Chancel Mbemba arriving from Anderlecht – and featuring in the second half against Monchengladbach – the Congo international may go on to replace Coloccini sooner than first suspected.

The report goes on to claim that Newcastle would almost certainly accept a cash bid for the player and with Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor and Paul Dummett also in the squad McClaren is not short of defensive options if he does wave goodbye to the club captain.
