Emre Can makes it clear to Brendan Rodgers where he wants to play next season

The 21-year-old Liverpool midfielder wants to be exactly that: a midfielder.

Emre Can says a place in Liverpool's midfield would be 'preferable' next season after spending much of last term's Premier League campaign at centre-back, according to the London Evening Standard.

The young German's versatility has been a credit to him but has also ultimately cost him an extended run at a central midfield role.

Next campaign, however, Can has sent a message to boss Brendan Rodgers that he will play where he can - but that he is a Liverpool midfielder first and foremost.

He is quoted as saying by the Standard: "A midfield role is preferable; of course it is the manager who decides who plays where.

"We'll see where he choses to play me this season. It is up to the manager but my preference is midfield. The most important thing is I feature in the games for Liverpool - that's my number one intention."

Can recently featured in defensive midfield for the Liverpool Under-21s, where he impressed supporters despite the Reds' eventual 1-0 defeat to Porto.

And a Liverpool midfield with the German finally restored to it is an intriguing prospect. Will Can hold, allowing Jordan Henderson and James Milner to roam with three forwards ahead of them? Or will the 21-year-old take the place of one of Milner or Henderson to allow the presence of a no.10?

Either way, Liverpool fans will no doubt be pleased if Can is granted his wish of playing in midfield. But such are the defensive nightmares of Rodgers teams at Anfield, it's far from certain the German will be allowed to step out of the back four just yet.
