Derby County beat Burton Albion 3-1 at the Pirelli Stadium.
Derby County ended their pre-season campaign with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Staffordshire-based outfit Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium.
Darren Bent, Andreas Weimann and Johnny Russell notched the goals, and it could have been better for the visitors had they been a little more prolific in front of goal.
It tops off a decent past two weeks for Paul Clement’s men, with performances against Utrecht, Villarreal and Burton far better than the sloppy displays at Grimsby and Northampton.
The one-cap Republic of Ireland international right-back joined the Rams from Coventry City last summer and started his career at the iPro Stadium in quite spectacular fashion.
So good were his early performances that supporters had already forgotten about former loan star Andre Wisdom, a key first-team performer during the team’s superb 2013/14 campaign.
However, Christie’s performances levels began to dip somewhat towards the end of last season and the team’s poor form put further pressure on his shoulders, a key factor which did little to help his cause.
A section of the Derby support soon grew frustrated with his error-prone displays and his confidence hit rock bottom, an amazing turnaround given his initial popularity and status with the Rams.
The potential is there for Christie to return to such heights. However, each slip, mistimed tackle or loose pass is now being unfairly castigated by his doubters, and it has probably gone too far.
In an otherwise solid display at Burton, the 22-year-old right-back again received plenty of flak on Twitter from those who evidently feel the player has little or no future at the club.
I wouldn't clap Christie if I was paid, why did people clap him when he went off? Do you really think he had a good game? #dcfc— no. (@Thanks_Matee) August 1, 2015
Difficult to see Cyrus Christie having a future at #dcfc , shame, looked a great prospect.— Matt Tweddle (@tweddytwedds) August 1, 2015
Since the first game of last season, Christie's performances have got worse and worse to now wondering if he is a professional at all #dcfc— Kev Cornforth (@Kevlar_90) August 1, 2015
A few stand out performances today. Baird, Russell and Thorne to name some. Christie and Shotton looked shaky again! #dcfc— »A$HL€Y« (@AshHardwick25) August 1, 2015
Decent 1st HF. Shackell domineering, Thorne & Baird look good holding MF's, Weimann & Russell interchanging on wings. Christie suspect #DCFC— Nick Birch (@BirchyN85) August 1, 2015
Christie and Shotton in the same team?! Oh deary me...#dcfc— Michael Barraclough (@m_barraclough) August 1, 2015
Cyrus Christie is one of the worst "footballers" I've ever seen in a Derby shirt #dcfc— no. (@Thanks_Matee) August 1, 2015
